Nga taonga kei roto I tou kete matauranga | What you bring:

The ideal candidate will have the ability to become a registered music therapist in New Zealand. You must have a relevant bachelor level degree, or higher; knowledge of how to engage and respond effectively to the individual needs of a range of diverse learners is also essential.  Training in, or an awareness of, Anthroposophical Musical Therapy and Te Ao Māori is an advantage.

As a music therapist, you will:

  • Assess young people to determine their needs, through questioning, examining and observing.
  • Develop and implement therapeutic interventions.
  • Plan and implement therapy goals for individuals.
  • Evaluate the progress of each person, keep records and report on progress.
  • Plan and engage in interactive music sessions with different class groups.
  • Help to develop the ways we engage in music throughout the school.
  • Work collaboratively with a variety of people.
  • Participate in community events eg festivals.
  • Communicate effectively with people we support (which may involve using Makaton, pictures, reading body language), their whānau and advocates.

To be effective in the role you will:

  • Be able to display empathy and respect.
  • Have skills in problem solving, as you support people to achieve their goals.
  • Have great communication skills, in person and in writing (including ability to keep accurate records and observations).
  • Be trustworthy with high ethical standards, able to respect confidentiality and privacy.
  • Have a mature attitude and good interpersonal skills; this includes being practical and ‘down to earth' about the nature of the role and being able to work with people who may have high support needs and behaviour which can be challenging.
  • Be drug free, and able to meet background check requirements (reference and police vetting report checks).
  • Have an understanding of, or willingness to learn about, Hōhepa’s special character based on anthroposophy (Rudolf Steiner).
